Update on Listeriosis in South Africa. Listeria is caused by eating contamivated food. It is caused by Listeria Monocytogenes and is susceptible to ampicillin and gentamin. It can cause abortions in susceptible mothers. Foods involved include fruit, vegetables, meat and poultrt. Hygiene especially washing of hands is essential. Contamination can come from the abattoir. Diagnosis is made from blood and CSF cultures. Patients present with nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhoea. If left untreated the disease can be fatal. Dehydration and septic shock occur. Intravenous fluids are essential .The death toll currently in South Africa is currently 106 patients.
